Top 5 things to watch out for when registering a domain name

In real life, the success of a store depends greatly on its location. The right location with good accessibility, foot traffic and visibility can mean instant success for a buisness. In the online world, it's the domain name that matters. It could be argued that many of the most popular destinations online such as Yahoo.com and Google.com got their head start thanks to easy to remember- and type- domain names.

Selecting a domain name for your site should be an extremely well researched process. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Try and choose a domain name that reflects your brand or the product you're selling in some form. Remember, your domain represents your entire identity online.
  • Check for potential trademark conflicts and violations before registering a domain name. Go to Google.com for example, and do a search on the desired name. See if any trademark surrounds that name. Sometimes your company name may be used by someone else online who happened to also have trademarked it.
  • Do not limit yourself to only .com names. While .com remains the most popular and "intuitive" suffix for domains, a great domain name ending in another suffix may pay off far better than an average .com name.
  • When registering a domain name, always input accurate contact information. Failure to enter a reachable email address, for example, may result in the loss of your domain name in cases when your attention is required, such as domain renewal. Furthermore, by law, a domain owner is required to truthfully enter his personal information.
  • Every domain has an expiration date. It is up to you to either register a domain for an extended period of time (ie: 5 years), or manually renew each year.
